Serving sizes don't care about you

We love round numbers:
*100-calorie packs of Oreos
*1 oz of potato chips
*1/2 of cooked rice

The problem is that these lovely, knowable, concrete numbers have absolutely nothing to do with your body, your needs, what will be satisfying to your unique needs in a given moment. They are in fact completely arbitrary, having way more to do with issues of food production and packaging than with meeting anyone's specific needs.

You know what does care about you? Your own body. It has been working for you from the moment of conception to protect you and keep you safe. That's why it stores fat, spares nutrients you take in too much of, and becomes more efficient when you aren't getting enough.

As much as your body cares about you, it needs you to care about it. To listen to it and what it is asking for. Once you start listening, you'll notice that your body is communicating with you ALL THE TIME. This communication forms the basis of the long-term relationship and the lifelong conversation you have with your body from the moment of birth to the moment of death.

Intuitive Eating is about shifting your allegiance from external things telling you what, when, and how much to eat (serving sizes included) to internal signals - hunger, fullness, personal preference, and what you find uniquely satisfying moment to moment.
